Green Light Priority Project Launched

Technology assists with on-time performance in Moorhead

10/20/2021

Green Light Priority is a new system that allows for MATBUS vehicles to receive "low priority" (not as high of priority as emergency vehicles) at traffic signals along bus routes. Moorhead buses have emitters installed, which communicate with the traffic signals to adjust the length of green lights. The emitters activate the traffic signals to turn green a little early if the bus arrives on a red light, or hold the light on green a little longer for the bus to travel through. This Green Light Priority will help improve on-time performance for all fixed routes in Moorhead.

Who Is Affected?
The new system will affect all Moorhead fixed route passengers.

Green Light Priority has been installed on all traffic signals along all Moorhead fixed routes.

What To Expect
The Green Light Priority signals may cause routes to arrive early, as the timetables were created without this system in place.

While the system is being tested, Moorhead buses may arrive up to five minutes early.

Moorhead passengers should plan to arrive five minutes early to their bus stop while we collect the necessary data. This data may result in adjusted timetables in the future.

The upgrade will limit the amount of time that buses spend at red lights, improving overall on-time performance.
